Ross premier men’s team recent unbeaten run continued with a 2-2 away draw
with Terrerath in the Waterford Men’s premier league.
In
the Wexford mixed league the division 6 team got back to winning ways with a 6-3
away victory in Ballycogley. What
was unusual about this game was the debut of 11-year-old Laura Lynch as
substitute for the injured Carol McDonald.
This would make Laura the youngest player ever to play in the adult
leagues and she fully justified her selection by winning the ladies doubles with
Helen Moore and the second mixed doubles with Eoin Mernagh. Wayne Redmond and
Helen Moore secured the other points for New Ross in the first mixed doubles.
Club Team Championship It’s
that time of the year again when the annual club team championships takes place.
The first of the semi-finals is on Tuesday next the 11th
December and players and managers have been mentally and physically preparing
themselves for the event over the past number of weeks.
This year the number of players on each team had to be extended to nine
to accommodate the increase in club membership.
The format of the games is also changed with the tournament organising
committee opting to run the event in the new style international format of games
played to seven points. In the
first semi-final Bennett’s Babes take on Nixon’s Vixens with Furlongs
Fusilier’s playing Wade’s Whacko’s in
the second match. Expert’s agree
that the Bennett’s babe team lead by captain Billy Bennett is probably the
best looking team of the four, but will they be able to keep their poise and
composure against the wild and canny team of Nixon’s Vixens.
When contacted during the week the Vixen’s team captain Alan Nixon
expressed himself totally satisfied with his team and is confident of
progressing to the final. The
second semi-final has the very regimented and precise team of Furlong’s
Fusiliers lead by superb tactician Pat Furlong up against the unpredictable
Wade’s Whacko’s. There is
little doubt that the Fusiliers will be extremely well prepared, but it will be
the performance of the Whacko’s that may determine the result.
Team captain Mary Wade believes that if they are on their game they will
be unstoppable, but she admits that until the night she has no way of knowing
how her team will react. Comeback A large crowd is expected in the hall on Thursday night when former club favourites Paddy Breen and Eileen May return to the courts. Those that have seen these players in action in their prime will be anxious to determine what a lengthy lay-off may have done to their obvious natural ability. The Club committee is also anxious for everything to proceed satisfactorily as it has missed the extra dimension that both players brought to the club. 17th November 2001 Results New
Ross premier men’s team continued their recent revival with a 2-2 home draw
with league leaders Waterford B.C. in the Waterford Men’s premier division.
Pat Lynch and Martin Regan secured the first of the two home victories in
the men’s doubles and Pat teamed up with John Galavan in the reverse doubles
to secure the second point. Team:
Pat Lynch (capt), Martin Regan, John Galavan, Billy Bennett. The
division 5 Wexford mixed team secured their first win of the season in the
rearranged game away to Ballycogley. Despite
a very slippery floor that made playing very tricky New Ross won the men’s
doubles and both mixed doubles to win by 6 sets to 2. Ironically their only loss
was in the ladies doubles, which were unbeaten before this.
Team: Adrian Delaney, Brian Cullen (Capt.), Orla Deegan and Mary
Wade. The
division 6 team recent run of good form came to an abrupt end on Monday last
when they were beaten 8-1 away to Ballykelly.
An injury to Helen Moore early in the match did not help their cause, but
the score line probably does not do justice to the New Ross performance as
several games were very close and could have gone either way.
This result puts Ballykelly firmly in the driving seat to top the
division and secure the first semi-final spot.
The defeat is a major blow to the New Ross prospects however giving them
only an outside chance of making the play-offs by securing the runners up spot.
Team: Wayne Redmond (capt), Eoin Mernagh, Helen Moore and Carol McDonnell. Leinster Individual Championship Good
luck to the following club members who have qualified for the Leinster
Individual Championships finals in Dublin over the weekend. In the division 2
ladies doubles Brideen Lynch & Orla Deegan have qualified for the semi-finals. As regular partner Pat in unavailable Brideen has teamed up
with Philip Walsh of Taghmon in the mixed doubles and they have reached the
quarter-finals. Brian Cullen is our only other representative and he has reached
the semi-finals of the Division 6 men’s doubles where he partners Paul Walsh
from the Ballykelly club. BUI Masters The BUI Inter county masters finals take place in Baldoyle Badminton Hall on Saturday next and Wexford will be trying to go one better than the last few years when they were narrowly beaten in both finals. They play Donegal in the semi-final, but they will be up against it on this occasion as injuries and withdrawals have depleted the team. Five New Ross players are travelling with the squad and we wish them well in their quest. They are: Pat & Brideen Lynch, Rosemary Burke, Billy Bennett and Pat Furlong.
9th November 2001 Results The
division 6 team continued their recent run of good form with another home
victory in round 2 of the Wexford division 6 mixed league.
This time the victims were Ballykelly C who were defeated by 8 games to
1. The team is now sitting at the
top of the league table, but more difficult games lie ahead.
Team panel: Wayne Redmond (capt), Eoin Mernagh, Helen Moore and Carol
McDonnell. Not
such good news of the division 5 team who lost their second straight game away
to Clongeen by 7 games to 2. Clongeen
is always a difficult venue for visiting teams and most will find this team a
hand-full particularly when playing at home. Orla Deegan and Mary Wade were New Ross only victors in the ladies
doubles. Team:
Adrian Delaney, Brian Cullen (Capt.), Orla Deegan and Mary Wade. Coaching
Attendance
was a little disappointing at the first of the club coaching sessions which took
place on Thursday last, but those present should befit from the experience and
the advice of club coach Pat Furlong.
