Championships
March 24th 2002 Champions defeated by New Ross in Waterford Final They say that perseverance eventually pays dividends and that was certainly the case on Thursday last when New Ross Badminton Club eventually won the Waterford Premier Mixed title after a lapse of five years. This win erased five years of frustration for New Ross who had lost out in the previous five semi-finals. When the victims in the final were Lady Lane BC who were the champions in that period it just added to the sense of achievement. Going into the game Lady Lane were very much the favourites as it was expected that with a full team on duty they would prove too strong yet again for their Wexford opponents. It started well for the underdogs however when Pat Lynch & Noel Carton took the first men's doubles in 3 sets, and New Ross really put it up to their opponents when Rosemary Burke and Brideen Lynch won the ladies doubles in straight sets. Lady Lane steadied the ship when John Riordan and Ger Meagher beat Noel Carton and Martin Regan in the 2nd men's doubles to leave the score at 2-1 in favour of New Ross. The second ladies doubles was a very close and tense game and when Rosemary Burke and Orla Deegan won in straight sets it was a massive boost for New Ross who now needed just one more game to clinch the title. This they achieved in the very next game when Pat & Brideen Lynch defeated Timmy Keogh and Mary Walsh in straight sets to the delight of the New Ross players.
Brian dominates County Finals
It was a hat trick of success for Brian Cullen in the County Championship finals in Taghmon Community Centre on Sunday night. It had started badly for Brian when he lost the six division singles in three sets to Colin Walsh from Ballycogley, but he quickly overcame this disappointment to partner Alan Nixon to success in the division six men's doubles and teamed up with Adrian Delaney to win the fifth division title. He secured his hat trick when winning the division six mixed doubles with Laura Lynch. This was also a personal triumph for Laura who at just 12 years of age becomes the youngest ever player to win an adult title. It was a hat trick as well for Pat Lynch, but unfortunately it was a hat trick of defeats. He lost the first division men's doubles with Noel Carton when they were beaten 5-15, 15-13, 8-15 by the number one seeds Liam Sinnott and Philip Walsh. He narrowly lost the division one mixed doubles with wife Brideen going down 15-5, 15-17,13-15 to Alan Carton and Miriam Butler from Clonroche, and to add salt to the wounds he lost the division 2 final 16-17, 12-15 to the same opposition when partnered by Deirdre Kehoe. The night was not a total loss however as he did have the consolation of winning the second division men’s doubles when he and partner Martin Regan defeated Philip Waddding & Stuart O'Tootle from Ferns 15-7,15-10. Martin claimed his second title by winning the division 3 men’s doubles with partner N Carton and Brideen Lynch and Rosemary Burke claimed the division 2 ladies doubles with a 2 sets to 1 victory over Deirdre Kehoe and Gillian Murphy from Taghmon. Also successful on the night was Orla Deegan who defeated Marianne Carroll from Taghmon 7-11,11-5,11-7 to win the division 4 ladies singles crown.
