Leinster Open Juvenile Championships

Wayne Redmond

The Leinster Open Juvenile Badminton Championships were held on Thursday, Friday and Saturday last in the Badminton centre Baldoyle.  This event attracts the cream of under age Badminton players and this year three players Wayne Redmond, Robert Farrell and Laura Lynch from New Ross were competing for the first time. All performed well among such illustrious company and particularly Wayne Redmond who came away with a runner up prize in the under 17 boys doubles. Playing with Donal O’Keefe from the Olympic BC they lost 15-13, 15-1 to another Wexford partnership of Vincent Mackay (Gusserane) and Craig Healy (Clonard).  Wayne also qualified for the singles quarter final, but found the number two seed John FitzGerald too hot to handle and lost 15-7, 15-1.  In the under 13 (B-singles) Robert Farrell was very impressive in progressing to the semi-finals. In round one he had a comfortable 21-7 victory over Bobby Smyth (Dublin) and beat another Dublin opponent Steven Kinsella 21-9 in round 2.  In the quarterfinals he disposed of John O’Gorman 15-7, 15-4 to set up a semi-final meeting with Ian Mercer from Yorkshire.  Unfortunately Robert could not repeat his performances of the earlier rounds and his English opponent won 15-5, 15-1.  It is still another step in the learning curve for young Robert and the experience should stand him well for future events.  Laura Lynch was competing in the girls under 13 singles, but was below her best when losing to the very impressive Laura Cousins from Hertfordshire in round 1.  As a first round loser she qualified for the plate event and took the opportunity to reach the final before losing 21-9 to Shauna Prendergast from Clare.  In the under 13 doubles Laura and her partner Michelle Ryan of Dublin drew the very impressive Yorkshire pairing of Laura Alison and Helen Waverley in round 1. Despite losing 15-4, 15-4 they put up a much better showing than the score line suggests against very strong opposition.  Defeat in round 1 again afforded the opportunity of success in the plate and on this occasion there was no mistakes when having qualified for the final they beat the Ulster partnership of Mary Ann Larkin and Orla Grehen 21-17 in a very tense game.

BUI Inter County Finals

It was disappointment yet again for the Wexford inter county team and club members Karen Hennessey, Brideen and Pat Lynch at the BUI finals in Galway on Saturday.  A 5-1 defeat of Donegal in the semi-final set up a final meeting with Kerry who had earlier overcome Meath 5-4 in the other semi-final.  Despite a brave showing and some excellent Badminton from the Wexford players a very strong and well-balanced Kerry team was to triumph by 5 games to 3.

On the badminton courts the club championships continue to dominate and the finalists in the Novice singles and Intermediate doubles are now known.  It's one up for the ladies in the novice event, which will feature an all female final between Clodagh McDonald and Anne Kelly. Clodagh was very impressive on her way to the finals with victories over Declan Burke by 21-8 and a semi-final defeat of last year’s runner-up Mary Holden by 21-2.  Anne Kelly was no less impressive in her games when defeating Marguerite Keane 21-10, Carol McDonnell 21-12 and the top seed Peter Meggs 21-16 in a very good semi-final.  The intermediate doubles, which was played on a round robin system, produced excellent Badminton and the final pairings are Alan Nixon and Eileen May who will play Eoin Mernagh and Shane Moran.

County Under 17 County Championships

Mary Wade

The county under 17 championships were held in the community centre Taghmon on Sunday night last and featured five players from New Ross.  Mary Wade and Orla Deegan retained their girls doubles title by defeating the Taghmon/New Ross pairing of Marianne Carroll and Laura Lynch 15-7, 15-8.  Orla Deegan repeated her county championship victory over Marianne Carroll 11-5, 11-3, to retain her singles title.  Wayne Redmond was defeated in the boy’s semi-final by Craig Healy Clonard, losing 15-12, 15-8, and he lost out in the boys doubles at the same stage by 15-13, 15-5 to Vincent Mackey and Lee Healy.

Club Championships

Kevin Burke

Another busy on the badminton scene with the conclusion of all the remaining games in the preliminary rounds of the club championships.  The senior singles produced some excellent badminton and its fair share of shocks before producing a unique final pairing of Joe Ryan and Karen Hennessey.  In qualifying for the final Karen will become the first ever female player to contest the senior singles final. Karen defeated under-age star Orla Deegan in the quarter finals in two very close sets, before eliminating last years runner up Martin Regan the semi-final. Joe Ryan overcame intermediate finalist Alan Nixon in his quarter final before causing a major upset by defeating the odds-on favourite Christopher MacMackin in the semi-final.  Karen and Joe were back in action on Thursday in the senior doubles and both will renew rivalry in this final. Karen partnered Pat Lynch to qualify from Group A while Joe and partner Billy Bennett were qualifying from group B.  In the novice doubles Declan Burke and Clodagh McDonald overcame Paul Carton and Mary Holden in the first semi-final and they will play Mary Pat Pilkington and Jane Parker who beat Peter Meggs and Louise Walsh in the other semi-final.  In the Three Bullet Gate sponsored under-age championships Declan Burke and cousin Claire Mernagh will meet Peter Meggs and Declan’s younger brother Kevin in the A final. Saibh Dolan and Michelle Boland meet in the B singles and Saibh and Claire Rheinhart play Jenny Parker and Grainne Burke in B Doubles. Noreen Murphy and Claire Rheinhart contest the B Plate singles.

Club Championships Finals

In 1975 Tommy McLoughlin donated a trophy to the New Ross Badminton club for the club senior singles championship. The first name on the trophy was an unknown singles player called Brian Hennessey.  On Tuesday last Brian’s daughter Karen created her own unique piece of club history when she became the first ever lady to win the event and her victory could not have been more dramatic.  Trailing opponent Joe Ryan in the 3rd set by 14 – 7 it looked all over, but that elusive 15th point proved very difficult for Joe to obtain and gradually his lead was dwindled away until the score was tied at 14 all.  Both players had their opportunities to win, but eventually at the second time of asking Karen got the all important point to secure a famous victory and add the Hennessey name to the famous trophy for a second time.  It was good night in general for the club ladies who came out on top in three of the four singles finals.  Orla Deegan inflicted a second successive final defeat on Alan Nixon when she won the Intermediate singles in three sets 3 -13, 13 – 9, 13 – 4.  Robert Farrell kept the male flag flying when he beat Laura Lynch in the junior singles 11 – 8, 11 –7, but the female dominance was restored when Clodagh McDonald won the novice singles by beating Peter Meggs 21 – 5.  There was some consolation for Joe Ryan when he and partner Billy Bennett won the senior doubles by beating Karen Hennessey and Pat Lynch 15 –3, 16 –17, 15 – 8.   Not such good news for Alan Nixon in his intermediate doubles final when he lost with partner Eileen May  9 –15, 15 –11, 15 –7 to Eoin Mernagh and Shane Moran.  No luck either for Laura Lynch when she and partner Carol McDonnell were beaten 15 –11, 15 – 6 by Helen Moore and Laura McGuinness.  In the novice doubles final Mary Pat Pilkington and Jane Parker won their first club trophy by beating Clodagh McDonald and Declan Burke 15 –11, 15–10.

Player of  the Year

Brian Cullen

For a truly outstanding season the club player of the year for 2001/2002 is Brian Cullen.  Brian was presented with his trophy by the club chairman Martin Regan.

Under Age Finals

Aoife Bennett

In the Three-Bullet Gate Under-age competitions there were victories for Peter Meggs over Niall Parker in the A singles, while Saibh Dolan won the B singles by defeating Michelle Boland.  In the plate events there were victories for Aoife Bennett in the A grade when she narrowly defeated Kevin Burke in a very exiting game and Claire Rheinhart overcame Noreen Murphy in the B Grade.  In the A doubles Claire Mernagh and Declan Burke beat Peter Meggs and Kevin Burke, while the B Doubles winners were Saibh Dolan and Claire Rheinhart who beat Jenny Parker and Grainne Burke.
