Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4

6th October.

On Saturday & Sunday in the Baldoyle Badminton Centre three of Barrow-sides finest under-age athletes will be action in the Leinster Badminton Close B Tournament.  The B-grade excludes provincial close champions, but otherwise the cream of Leinster under-age players will be in attendance.  Hoping for success in the under 13 girls singles is Laura Lynch, one of the seeded players and a title winner last year.  Robert Farrell will be competing in the under 13 boy’s singles and will hope to continue the improvement shown last season when he made his debut at this level.  Robert is currently struggling to overcome injury problems, which has curtailed his preparations and may even prevent his participation in the event.  Orla Deegan was a winner last year in the under 15 age group, but this year is moving up to the under 17 age bracket.  Orla has made steady progress up through the grades and with a provincial title and success in the Wexford county championships least season she is well equipped to trouble the best of players on her day.

In the domestic competitions New Ross will have teams participating in three divisions in the Wexford mixed league.  It will be a busy time for the clubs first team of Pat & Brideen Lynch, Rosemary Burke and Martin Regan who are also competing in the Waterford gents and ladies league.  The division three team is a mixture of youth and experience, with the evergreen Billy Bennett joined by former Ballykelly player Christopher McMackin plus under-age stars Orla Deegan, and Mary Wade.  The division five team comprises club player of the year Brian Cullen, team captain Adrian Delaney, Clodagh McDonald in only her second year playing the sport and the experienced Helen Moore.

Martin Regan

A very enjoyable and well-supported coaching session for novice players was held on Monday last under the guidance of club coach Martin Regan.  More sessions are planned during the season to help improve the player’s techniques and their enjoyments of the sport.

Laura Lynch

It was a double, double Leinster championship success for New Ross badminton club when under age stars Laura Lynch and Orla Deegan dominated the finals of the Leinster Close B championships held in the Baldoyle Badminton Centre on Sunday last.  Orla won the girls under 17 singles and doubles events and not to be outdone Laura also achieved the same success in the under 13 events.  Laura was a member of last years Leinster under 13 team and fully justified her number one seeding in the singles when cruising through the earlier rounds to set     up a meeting against doubles partner and fellow Leinster squad member Kate Mullery in the final.  This had the making of a cracking game and the opening jousts were very even. Kate started slightly the better and took an early advantage to lead by six aces to four.  Slowly however Laura began to gain the upper hand and playing some scintillating badminton began to dominate the match to eventually run out a comfortable winner 21 – 7.  Kate and Laura then teamed up for the girl’s doubles and qualified with considerable ease for the finals.  The final itself was a slightly closer affair, but they were never in any danger eventually winning by 21 aces to 9.

Orla Deegan

Orla Deegan was un-seeded in her events in the under 17 grade, but hopes were high in the club that she would perform well and this she certainly did.  Orla was in great form in cruising her way to the final and a meeting with the number one seed and title favourite Catherine McDonald from Dundalk.  This was expected to be an easy victory for the talented Dundalk player, but Orla had not read the script and turning in one of her best ever performances she totally outclassed her opponent to win 21 – 3.  Orla and Catherine were partners for the doubles event that was played on a round robin system.  The New Ross/Dundalk pairing easily qualified as winners from pool B to set up a final against Michelle Granville and Fiona Byrne from Dublin where they were much the stronger pairing and won comfortably by 21 – 7.  Orla’s success will not have gone unnoticed by the Leinster selectors and will also strengthen her case for inclusion on the Wexford adult county teams.

On the county scene congratulations are extended to Eoin Mernagh, Mary Wade and Orla Deegan on their inclusion on the county under-19 squad for the forthcoming inter county championships.

On the adult scene New Ross will begin their Waterford league campaign with a home game against title favourites Lady Lane from Waterford.  The ladies have a bye in round 1, but begin their campaign in round 2 away to Lady Lane.

Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4

20th October.

New Ross Premier men’s team began their Waterford league campaign with mixed results from their opening two games.  Playing at home in their opening fixture against Lady Lane from Waterford they achieved a very creditable two all draw.  Pat Lynch & Martin Regan got the home team off to a winning start with a two set to one victory over Waterford inter county players Timmy Keogh and Martin Walsh.  When Ralph Stone and substitute Christopher McMackin took the second game in two straight sets it looked like New Ross were set for a famous victory over their great rivals. However Lady Lane are not the reigning champions and title favourites without a reason and just when the match seemed to be slipping away from them they dug in and reversed the result in the second round of matches. Timmy Keogh and Ger Martin beat Pat Lynch and Christopher McMackin by two sets to one and Martin Walsh and Kieran Reidy had a similar victory over Martin Regan and Ralph stone. On Sunday night New Ross travelled the short distance to visit local rivals Terrerath who have had the hoodoo sign over the club in recent times.  In the opening game Pat Lynch and Martin Regan found it difficult to cope with the attacking game of Jimmy Sinnott and Seamus Creane, eventually losing by the odd set in three.  Christopher McMackin and Adrian Delaney put up a brave show against the experienced pairing of John Joe Murphy and Sonny Cahill before going down in three sets.  Pat Lynch and Christopher McMackin brought New Ross back into the game when beating Seamus Creane and John Joe Murphy in three sets but  Terrearth recovered well and Jimmy Sinnott and Sonny Cahill completed a miserable night for New Ross when they beat Martin Regan and Adrian Delaney by two sets to one.

The Wexford mixed leagues gets under way this week with New Ross having a difficult away game against Taghmon this Thursday in division 2.  There is a local derby in Division 3 with New Ross travelling to Campile, while the division 5 team should have good support for their opening game at home to Clonard B, also on Thursday night.

There is a very disappoint entry from the club in the county under age championships taking place in Ramsgrange on Saturday with only Laura Lynch, Amy McGuinness, Laura McGuinness and Shane Moran travelling for the event.  Congratulations are extended to Laura on her selection for the Leinster under 13 team to face the Welsh national team in Terenure College on Saturday the 2nd November.

Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4

27th October.

In the first Grad Prix event of the year sixteen-year-old Orla Deegan enhanced her growing reputation in the under age ranks by reaching the 3rd round of the girl’s under 17 singles event in the Dublin Juvenile tournament on Sunday.  Orla eventually lost narrowly to the stylish international starlet Lisa Tweed 11-9, 11-8 in an excellent game of badminton.  Orla and partner Catherine McDonald from Dundalk reached the semi-final of the girl’s doubles before succumbing to a very strong Ulster pairing.

Friday it is the turn of 12-year-old Laura Lynch who will be in action in the girls under 13 singles and doubles.  Laura geared up for the event in impressive fashion by winning the girls singles events in the under 13 and 15 grade in the Wexford Juvenile Close championships held in Ramsgrange Community college on Saturday last.  In the under 13 event Laura completed the round robin event with the loss of just one set, which was in the opening game against the Taghmon star Aoife Morrissey.  Aoife eventually finished second with Deirdre Stafford from Campile in third place.  Laura continued her impressive form in the afternoon to add the under 15 grade to her morning success.  Elaine Morrisey from Taghmon was second with sister Aoife in third place.  Laura then teamed up with club mate Laura McGuinness and reached the final of the girl’s doubles before losing narrowly 17-15 to the Taghmon pairing of Elaine Morrissey and Maire Kelly.

There were mixed results for the various adult teams in the Waterford and Wexford leagues during the week.  On Sunday the Waterford premier men’s team bounced back from the disappointment of losing to Terrerath in their previous game to record a fine 3-1 home win over Lismore BC.  Pat Lynch and Noel Carton set New Ross on the way with a two sets to one victory over Colin Coleman and Pat Morrissey.  Lismore hit back to level the match when Kevin Cahill and Jerry Pratt beat Martin Regan and Billy Bennett.  From then on however it was all New Ross with Pat Lynch and Martin Regan winning comfortably 15-5, 15-9 and Noel Carton and Billy Bennett also very impressive in winning 15-8, 15-6.

In the Wexford mixed leagues there was a four all home draw for the division 5 team against Clonard.  Brian Cullen and Adrian Delaney secured two of the New Ross points in the men’s doubles and Adrain Delaney and Clodagh McDonald the other two in the second mixed doubles.  The division 2 team lost narrowly away to Taghmon by five sets to four.  Rosemary Burke and Brideen Lynch obtained two of the New Ross points in the ladies doubles with a fine two sets to one victory over Siobhan and Deirdre Kehoe.  Rosemary repeated her success in the second mixed doubles with a two sets to love victory with partner Martin Regan over Stuart O’Toole and Deirdre Kehoe.  The division three team minus Christopher McMackin and Orla Deegan were well beaten eight games to nil away to neighbours Campile.  Despite the score line it was not all one way traffic with team captain Mary Wade and sub Laura Lynch pushing the experienced Celine Hayes and Sandra Dunne all the way in the ladies doubles and Billy Bennett and Mary Wade a little unlucky not to gain a point in the first mixed doubles.
