Player of the Year Awards

Congratulations to Pat and Brideen Lynch for their unique achievement on being awarded the male and female player of the year award by the County Wexford Badminton Association for the 00/01 season.  The awards are sponsored by New Ross Community Workshop and are based on performances over the season in local and national competitions.  Last season was particularly good for Pat and Brideen with success in the county championship in level doubles and the division two mixed doubles.  With the club teams there was success in the county mixed league and the Leinster inter club competition.  Pat and Brideen have been at the top in badminton in Wexford since the early eighties.  They have won seven county division one mixed doubles titles and between them have seven Leinster grade one mixed double titles and three level doubles titles.  They have played on the Wexford inter county team for over twenty years and between them have won over eleven All-Ireland and fifteen Leinster inter county titles.  What was particularly unique on this occasion was the fact that this was the first time that the awards were won by a husband and wife combination.  This is Pat's first award, but Brideen was a previous winner in 1992.

Dublin Juvenile Open

Orla Deegan has continued where she left off last season with a good performance in this open tournament played in Terenure.  Oral was competing against the best juveniles in Ireland and reached the final of Plate singles before losing 5/11 6/11 in a game that featured some excellent badminton. Orla also played with Marianne Carroll from Taghmon in the girl’s doubles, but they were beaten in the early rounds.

Team News

A poor start by our Waterford Premier Men's team with a defeat in their opening two games against Lismore and Terrerath.  Big improvements in round 3 however with a clean sweep of matches at home to Touraneena.  Better news from the division 6 team in the Wexford mixed league with an excellent home victory against an inexperienced Ballycogley B team.  This result sets them up nicely for a good league run. A mix-up in dates meant our 5th division team had no first round game away to Ballycogley B.  In round 2 they came up against league favourites Gusserane and were beaten at home by 8 games to 2.

Charity Tournament

Members of the club have entered in 39 events in the Creane & Creane sponsored County Charity Tournament in aid of Cancer research.  Good luck to all concerned.
