It
was a purrfect ending for the Pumas in their exciting victory over a most
unlucky Jaguar team in the final of the New Ross Intermediate Club team
championships. Going into the final game of the night the Jaguars
led by 8-6, but victory for Jason Larkin and Aoife Bennett over Joseph
Meggs and Jenny Parker tied the match at 10-10 and the Pumas took the
title by virtue of having scored 175 to 162 aces. The match started
well for the Pumas with Joseph Sinnott and Raymond Breen defeating the
Jaguars top pairing of
Sue Barrett
and Ella Bigos 11/9, 11/3. The Jaguars response was swift and at the
half way point they led 6-4 with Eoin Murphy and Eoghan Cashin winning
11/6, 11/8 against Liz Murphy and Helen Moore, Claire Mernagh and Joseph
Meggs overcoming Niall Parker and Jason Larkin 11/6, 7/11, 11/7 and
Kenneth Redmond and Jenny Parker defeating Colin Fenlon and Aoife Bennett
6/11, 11/10, 11/7. I t was looking even better for the Jag’s when
Sue Barrett
and Eoin Murphy defeated Joseph Sinnott and Liz Murphy 11/3, 11/8, but
from here till the end it was all Pumas. Raymond Breen and Helen
Moore defeated Ella Bigos and Eoghan Cashin 9/11, 11/4, 11/2, Niall Parker
and Colin Fenlon overcame Claire Mernagh and Kenneth Redmond 11/8, 1/11,
11/8 and the final game went to Larkin and Bennet 1/1, 11/4. In the
presentation ceremony club chairman
Ralph Stone
was full of praise both for the standard of badminton, the commitment of
the players on each team and the excitement of the contest. |

The
Tornados repeated their earlier success over the Comets to win this years title
in a keenly contested final. Team captain Helen Moore and Fiona Phelan got
the Tornados off to the best possible start when defeating Caroline Sinnott and
Mary Kavanagh 21-10, but the Comets hit back to level the score with Sue Barrett
and Bernie Phelan defeating Theresa Fenlon and Sharon Kearns 21-17. In the
second series of games the Comets took a 2-1 lead when Caroline Sinnott and Sue
Barrett came out on top 21-16 against Helen Moore and Theresa Fenlon. The
Tornados levelled proceeding again when Sharon Kearns and young Aoife Bennett
defeated Caroline Murray and Bernie Phelan 21-14. All to play for then in
the final series of games and Fiona Phelan and Sharon Kearns took a decisive
point for the Tornadoes when defeating Mary Kavanagh and Bernie Phelan 21-15 and
they secured the title when Helen Moore and Aoife Bennett defeated Sue Barrett
and Caroline Murray 21-13. In presenting the trophies to the winners club
chairman Martin Regan congratulated all the players for the high standard of
badminton throughout the tournament and particularly the commitment and
dedicated shown in final.

The Tornados literally blew away
the Comets in the final of the novice team championships with some scintillating badminton. It all went
wrong for the Comets from the very first game when Valerie Roche and Declan
Burke secured a 4-1 lead for the Tornados when they defeated the Mother/son
partnership of Greta and Peter Meggs. It was an uphill struggle from
then on for the Comets and things went from bad to worse when Ann Sullivan and
Bernadette Phelan increased the Tornados lead wining 4-0 over Theresa
Fenlon and Frances Murphy. The Tornados could now relax and they increased
their lead even further when Valerie Roche and Ann Sullivan defeated Peter Meggs and
Theresa Fenlon 3-0. The Comets recovered somewhat in the final match when
Greta Meggs and Frances Murphy defeated Declan Burke and Bernadette Phelan 4-0
to leave the final score 10-5 in favour of the Tornadoes.
