3rd November. No Report
10th November.
A
fine 4-0 home victory over bottom of the table Touraneena keeps the New Ross
ladies team on top of the Waterford premier league with a six point cushion over
nearest rivals Lady Lane, but with a game extra played.
Team Brideen Lynch, Rosemary Burke, Karen Hennessey and Oral Deegan.
On the same night the
Touraneena men’s team were faring no better on court 2 against their New Ross
counterparts who were also recording a clean sweep of matches.
This was a much tighter match however than the score line suggests, but
the better balanced home side managed to stay in control and win all four
matches dropping just one set in the process. This win improves their league
chances, putting them one point ahead of early pace setters and local rivals
Terrerath, but with an extra game played.
Team: Pat Lynch, Noel Carton, Martin Regan, and Ralph Stone.
The Wexford Division 3 team
finally got off the mark and recorded their first success when drawing 5-5 at
home against Olympic B.
Again minus the service of first man Christopher McMackin they pushed a
strong and experienced Olympic side all way and a draw was probably a fair
result for both teams on the night.
New Ross gained their points in the ladies doubles and the first mixed
doubles and picked up an extra point in the second mixed doubles.
New Ross team:
Billy Bennett, Brian Cullen, Orla Deegan and Mary Wade.
Perhaps the best performance
of the week was the 7-2 victory of the division 5 side away to the high riding
Olympic team. With
a 5-5 home draw against Clonard B and a 6-2 defeat to Ballycogley in their two
previous games this was the surprise result in round three of the league.
Brian Cullen and Adrian Delaney were very impressive in the men’s
doubles and won comfortably in straight sets.
Helen Moore and Laura Lynch were a little unlucky to lose their ladies
doubles by 2 sets to 1 and both New Ross mixed doubles partnerships of Brian
Cullen/Helen Moore and Adrian Delaney/Laura Lynch won convincingly in two sets
to move the team well up the table.
The second coaching session
for the club novice players was held on Tuesday night under the guidance of club
coach Martin Regan. Already the progress of those players in attendance can be
seen on court and more sessions are planned for later in the year.
There was disappointment for
the county under 19 team with the postponement of the under-19 inter county
championships due to be held on the 17th November.
As a result training has temporarily been put on hold while an
alternative date is arranged.
The postponement is not all bad news however as it gives the returning
Wayne Redmond the opportunity to play his way on to the panel and Amy McGuinness
the opportunity to consolidate her position having just been drafted into the
squad.
17th November.
It was experience versus
youth when former champions New Ross entertained the young pretenders from
Taghmon in the penultimate round of the Wexford division 2 league on Thursday
last. League
leaders Taghmon started brightly with the Kehoe sisters Siobhan and Deirdre
dominating the opening set against Rosemary Burke and Brideen Lynch and
eventually winning it by 11 aces to nil.
The New Ross ladies recovered well however and turned the match around in
the second and third set winning both on a score-line of 11 – 7, 13 – 10 to
put the home side up by 2 games to1.
Taghmon replied quickly by taking the opening set in the men’s doubles
with Philip Walsh and Stuart O’Toole defeating Pat Lynch and Martin Regan 15
– 7. The
New Ross pairing won the second set 15 – 5 to restore the home teams
advantage, but Taghmon levelled the match on the night by winning the third set
15 – 8. With
the match evenly poised it was now down to the two mixed doubles games to decide
the outcome. The
husband and wife partnership of Pat and Brideen Lynch took an early lead in the
first mixed doubles, but were caught by the Taghmon pairing of Philip Walsh and
Siobhan Kehoe eventually losing it by 11 – 9.
New Ross took the second set 11 – 5 and the 3rd set was a real cracker
with first one side and then the other gaining the upper hand.
New Ross lead by 10 – 9, but could not get the vital last ace and for
the second time in the space of two weeks against the same opposition they lost
the third set on a tie break by 13 – 11.
Taghmon now had a 5 – 4 advantage, but the match was once again on
level terms when Martin Regan and Rosemary Burke took the opening set in the
second mixed doubles 11 – 9.
The Taghmon pairing of Stuart O’Toole and Deirdre Kehoe rallied however
to take the final two games 11 – 7, 11 –6 to give Taghmon a 7 –5 victory
on the night. This
win almost certainly guarantees them the division 2 title, as they need just one
point from their final game at home to bottom of the table Clonroche.
Having gained their first
points last week in the 5 – 5 home draw against Olympic, the clubs division 3
team were brought back to earth when they were on the receiving end of an 8 –
0 score-line away to title challengers Taghmon B in round 4 of the league.
Despite the score-line all games were very competitive and New Ross may
have been a little unlucky not to secure a point, or two on the night
particularly in the men’s doubles and first mixed doubles.
Team: Christopher McMackin, Billy Bennett, Orla Deegan and Mary Wade.
The division 5 team continue
to show improved form and followed up their fine 7 –2 away victory over
Ballycogley with another excellent 8 – 1 victory away to Clonard.
Team: Adrian
Delaney, Shane Moran, Helen Moore and Clodagh McDonald.
In the Waterford premier league the New Ross ladies took a major step in their quest for league honours with a fine 4 – 0 away victory against Touraneena. This result means a draw in their final home game against second place Lady Lane will be enough to secure a first ever title for the home side.
24th November.
One
of Wexford’s most promising under-age players Orla Deegan from New Ross
Badminton club further enhanced her growing reputation at national level with a
runner up spot in the mixed doubles and a victory in the under-17 plate singles
events at the Leinster close Badminton Championships held in Baldoyle Badminton
Centre on Saturday last. When you consider that Orla only meet her mixed
doubles partner Bryan Henderson from Ulster on the Saturday morning, to progress
to the final of such a major tournament was a major achievement for an untried
partnership. The disappointment of losing the final to Irish stars Evan McMillan
and Jan Kinade was soon forgotten with further success in the ladies doubles
when partnered by county compatriot Marianne Carroll from Taghmon before losing
at the semi-finals stage. Orla was not yet finished and added a second
victory of the year over Catherine McDonald from Dundalk in the plate singles
when winning easily 11-3,11-3. This is one of the major tournaments on the
Badminton calendar and Orla’s achievements marks her out as one of the future
stars of Wexford and Irish Badminton.
Laura
Lynch was also adding to her reputation when competing in the Coca Cola
sponsored Connacht Juvenile Open Championship held over two days on Saturday and
Sunday last in Salthill, Galway. In the morning Laura won her first round
singles games in fine style with a two sets to love victory 11/5, 11/5 over the
Ulster player Claire Davis. In round two she meet Isabelle Mortimer who is
better know on the squash circuit and currently ranked number 2 on the national
list. The unconventional play of the Galway girl caused Laura all sorts of
problems and she was very disappointed to be beaten in two sets 11/9, 11/7.
In the afternoon however her game was back on track when she teamed up with
partner Kate Mullery from Dublin. A quarter final defeat in three sets
9/11, 11/5, 11/5 of the number two seeds O. Creaven and M.A. Larkin set up a
semi-final meeting with the Galway pairing of Isabelle Mortimer and Kate
Tierney. An 11/8, 11/5 victory was some consolation for Laura for her
singles defeat in the morning to Mortimer and secured a meeting in the final
with the number one seeds Norma McIntyre and Ciara Pender. There was to be
no more giant killing however for the Wexford/Dublin partnership in the final on
Sunday as the number 1 seeds better all round understanding and general play
proved much superior and was enough to secure a two sets to love victory 11/3,
11/3. It
was a poor week for the clubs adult teams with heavy defeats for the division 3
and 5 teams in the Wexford mixed leagues. A depleted division 3-team
continue to struggle and were on the receiving end of a double drumming during
the week with successive 8-0 defeats at home to Campile and Taghmon. These
results keeps the team firmly rooted at the bottom of the table with just 5
points from their opening five games. Team panel: Billy Bennett,
Adrian Delaney, Orla Deegan, Mary Wade, Laura Lynch.
After
two fine away victories the division 5-team were disappointing when losing 8-1at
home to leaders Ballycogley. The forced absence of team captain Adrian
Delaney on the night not helping their cause against the well-balanced
Ballycogley team. This setback effectively ends their hopes of league
honours. Team: Brian Cullen, Shane Moran, Helen Moore and Clodagh
McDonald.
The only bright spot of the week was the 2-2 draw secured by the Waterford premier men’s team away to Lady Lane. The score-line keeps alive their chances of league success, but a knee injury to Pat Lynch is a worry for the remaining games.
