Div 2 Mixed Doubles Final

New Ross members featured in 12 of the 32 county finals down for decision in the recent Ashaway Wexford championships in Ramsgrange Community School and finished up with 6 county titles.  Pat Lynch and Ralph Stone reclaimed the division 2 men’s doubles title with a straight sets victory over Clonroche’s Francis Morrissey and Sean Sexton .  Laura Lynch won her first division 2 title when she and Olympic partner Donal O’Keeffe got the better of Pat & Brideen Lynch in 3 sets in an exciting mixed doubles final.  Neil Barrett is the men’s division 3 singles and doubles champion.  John Nolan secured the division 4 men’s singles title after a titanic 3 set struggle with Mark Mullen (Clonard).  Despite a slow start Raymond Breen won his first county badminton title in the division 7 men’s singles competition, beating Ger Cullen (Galbally) in 3 sets.  There were runners-up spots for Brideen Lynch and Karen Hennessey in the division 2 ladies doubles and for Laura Lynch and Celine Hayes in the division 3 ladies doubles.  Laura also received runner-up awards in the division 1, 2 & 3 single events having been forced to concede these games due to a clash with under-age inter county matches.

It was a good week in the main for club teams with the Waterford division 1 mixed doubles team securing their place in the final with a 5-1 victory away in Lismore.  The result mean’s New Ross top the table and go straight into the final, where they await the winners of the playoff for the remaining spot between  Ballymacabarry and the defending champions Waterford.  New Ross:  Colm Byrne, Pat Lynch , Neil Barrett, Rosemary Burke, Brideen Lynch and Celine Hayes.  In the Wexford men’s doubles league there was a fine 7-3 victory for New Ross over Olympic in New Ross.  The home side dropped a point in the first game of the night with Adrian Delaney and Pat Furlong losing in 3 sets.  From there on however it was all New Ross with John Nolan/ Andrew Wayland and the reverse double pairings of Adrian Delaney/John Nolan and Pat Furlong / Andrew Wayland winning their respective matches.  Not such good news for the ladies division 5 team who lost 7-2 at home to a very impressive Davidstown team.  The score line does not fully reflect the closeness of many of the games however and New Ross could have secured at least one or two more points on the night. The home side only success came in the final game with Sue Barrett and Ella Bigos overcoming Kathleen Flood and Sharon Doyle, 17/14, 12/15, 15 /9 to salvage something for the home team.

Pat Furlong

New Ross men’s division 2 and 4 teams were in action during the week and both had fine away victories over Clonroche and Shelburne respectively.  The division 2 team were away to league leaders Clonroche and in the absence of Pat Lynch due to illness Donal O’Keeffe stepped in as a late replacement.  Colm Byrne and Donal got the visitors off to a good start with a straight sets victory over Philip Walsh and Noel Carton.  Clonroche won the second men’s with Frankie Morrissey and Sean Sexton getting the better of Ralph Stone and Neil Barrett in 3 sets to leave the score at half-time at 3-2 to the visitors.  In the reverse doubles Colm Byrne and Ralph Stone increased the New Ross lead when they defeated Philip Walsh and Sean Sexton in straight sets and the home side conceded the final game to leave New Ross 7-2 winners on the night, a result that puts the barrowsiders back into contention in the league and dents the Clonroche teams title aspirations.

The New Ross men’s division 4 team are going well in their division and they had an excellent 8-0 victory over local rivals Shelburne.  The New Ross sides cause was helped by the absence of David Ryan from the home side, but the victory puts the visitors into 2nd place in the league, 4 points behind the leaders Campile. New Ross team: Adrian Delaney, Pat Furlong , John Nolan and Andrew Wayland

Club members Karen Henessey, Laura Lynch, Brideen Lynch, Ralph Stone and Pat Lynch were on the Wexford team that regained the Leinster Class 2 title in exciting fashion in Dublin on Sunday last.  Colm Byrne was the only representative on the class 1 team and he picked up a runners-up trophy when Wexford narrowly lost to Meath in the division 1 final.

The club wishes a speedy recovery to Helen Moore who is currently recovering from a broken finger sustained in a fall as she made her way from practice.  Hopefully she will be back fully fit for the club championships in April.

Celine Hayes

The division 1 ladies doubles team lost the 2nd leg of their league final 8-2 away to Taghmon.  Having won the 1st leg 8-1 in New Ross the 2nd round was just a formality for the south Wexford side who duly added the ladies title to the mixed doubles title won before Christmas.  Celine Hayes was the pick of the New Ross players on the night securing both points for the visitors with partners Rosemary Burke and Karen Hennessy .  New Ross:  Brideen Lynch, Rosemary Burke, Karen Hennessy and Celine Hayes.  Taghmon: Siobhan Kehoe, Deirdre Kehoe, Elaine Dunne and Gillian Murphy.

The division 1 men’s team have been overtaken at the top of their league by Olympic, who currently hold a 2 point advantage over the local side.  New Ross do have home advantage for the final game against Olympic which should be a real cracker.  The club’s division 4 side continue to hang on to top spot in division 4, just ahead of district rivals Campile who have a game in hand.

The New Ross division 2 mixed doubles team have made it to the last four of the Leinster Inter club championships.  Champions in 2003 and semi-finalists last season they must now await the winners of the quarter final encounter between County Club (Laois League) and Gurteen (SWLBL) to see who they will meet in the semi-final.  All semi-finals and finals will be played in Dublin on the 24th April.

The Waterford division 1 mixed doubles team await the winners of the Waterford versus Ballymacaberry semi-final clash to see who they will meet in this year’s Waterford ’s final.

Congratulations to Laura Lynch, Rosemary Burke and Karen Hennessy who were on the Wexford team that qualified for their second Class 3 All- Ireland final in a row in Clonmel on Sunday last.  Wexford just about made it through to the April final when securing the 3rd and final qualifying spot.  Unfortunately for Wexford, Laura Lynch who won all her games on Sunday will be missing for the final as she has been selected to play with the Leinster team in the Pan-Celtic Tournament the same weekend.

The Novice Singles competition kicks off this year’s eagerly awaited New Ross club championship on the 6th April.  Play will continue over the month of April with competitions taking place in four different categories, with the finals and award night taking place on Thursday the 28th April.  Entries for all grades close this Thursday at 8:30 p.m. when the draws will be made.
