Despite
an unexpected 6-3 victory over Taghmon in the 2nd leg of the division 1
mixed league final it was not enough to deny the defending champions the
opportunity of retaining their title and to go on to represent Wexford in
the Leinster inter club championship later in the season. Having
been soundly trashed 8-1 in the opening leg New Ross were not expected to
fare much better in the 2nd encounter but the home side took the opening
ladies doubles game with considerable ease with Rosemary Burke and Brideen
Lynch completely dominated their match against Elaine Dunne and Gillian
Murphy to win 15/1, 15/2. The men’s doubles game was expected to
be a banker for the visiting side with the county number 1 pairing of
Edward Cousins and Philip Walsh up against former county champions Colm
Byrne and
Pat Lynch
. This was a most exciting tussle with the home pairing inflicting a
rare defeat on the Taghmon duo to win 6/15, 15/13, 15/13. Taghmon
hit back to take the opening mixed doubles match when Edward Cousins and
new partner Elaine Dunne secured the title for the visitors by virtue of a
15/7, 15/8 success over Colm Byrne and Rosemary Burke. New Ross had the
final say on the night however when Pat & Brideen Lynch won the 2nd
mixed doubles game 15/3, 15/5 against Philip Walsh and Gillian Murphy to
leave the final score at 6-3 to New Ross, but the title going south to
Taghmon by an overall aggregate of 11-7.
The
New Ross division 5 team finished their league campaign with a very creditable
5-5 draw away to Clonroche. The result means that Clonroche go on to the
playoff stage of the league while New Ross finish in 3rd spot and are left
wondering on what might have been. Both the doubles matches on the night
were shared with Adrian Delaney and
Andrew Wayland
picking up two points for the visitors, but Clonroche taking the ladies doubles
with
Sue Barrett
and Christina Sinnott losing in 2. The mixed doubles were also shared
equally with Adrian and Sue winning in 3 sets, but Andrew and Christina going
down in 3 to leave the final score tied at 5-5.
No
mixed league titles then for the club, but there was a runner spot for the
division1 and 2 teams. The club is now gearing up for the Wexford shield
and the ladies and gents leagues plus the Waterford mixed league.

It
was a purrfect ending for the Pumas in their exciting victory over a most
unlucky Jaguar team in the final of the New Ross Intermediate Club team
championships. Going into the final game of the night the Jaguars
led by 8-6, but victory for Jason Larkin and Aoife Bennett over Joseph
Meggs and Jenny Parker tied the match at 10-10 and the Pumas took the
title by virtue of having scored 175 to 162 aces. The match started
well for the Pumas with Joseph Sinnott and Raymond Breen defeating the
Jaguars top pairing of
Sue Barrett
and Ella Bigos 11/9, 11/3. The Jaguars response was swift and at the
half way point they led 6-4 with Eoin Murphy and Eoghan Cashin winning
11/6, 11/8 against Liz Murphy and Helen Moore, Claire Mernagh and Joseph
Meggs overcoming Niall Parker and Jason Larkin 11/6, 7/11, 11/7 and
Kenneth Redmond and Jenny Parker defeating Colin Fenlon and Aoife Bennett
6/11, 11/10, 11/7. I t was looking even better for the Jag’s when
Sue Barrett
and Eoin Murphy defeated Joseph Sinnott and Liz Murphy 11/3, 11/8, but
from here till the end it was all Pumas. Raymond Breen and Helen
Moore defeated Ella Bigos and Eoghan Cashin 9/11, 11/4, 11/2, Niall Parker
and Colin Fenlon overcame Claire Mernagh and Kenneth Redmond 11/8, 1/11,
11/8 and the final game went to Larkin and Bennet 1/1, 11/4. In the
presentation ceremony club chairman
Ralph Stone
was full of praise both for the standard of badminton, the commitment of
the players on each team and the excitement of the contest.
An
excellent start for the clubs
Waterford
division 1 team with
a 5-1 away victory in
Waterford
over the defending
champions
Waterford
BC
. Rosemary Burke
and Karen Henessey got the team off to a perfect start with a 15/13, 17/15
victory over Mary Walsh and Fiona Walsh. Colm Byrne and
Pat Lynch
lost the opening set
to Timmy Keogh and Martin Walsh 15/6, but recovered to take the next two
15/8, 15/5. New Ross were 3-0 up when Karen Henessey and Brideen
Lynch defeated Fiona Walsh and Kate Hayes 11/15, 15/2, 15/4. Colm
Byrne and
Ralph Stone
increased the lead
further when they won the 2nd men’s doubles 15/13, 15/0. A tight
1st mixed doubles went to Pat & Brideen Lynch 5/15, 15/12, 15/12, but
Waterford
did salvage something
from the night when they won the final mixed game 15/9, 15/8.

Sue
Barrett |
After
the recent series of games in the New Ross club’s single ladder
Sue Barrett
, John Nolan and Ray Breen have made significant moves upwards.
Sue Barrett
who started the year in 13th position has now moved up to 8th after her
17/14, 15/9 victory over Helen Moore. Sue is now the 2nd ranked lady
in the club, just one spot behind the current number one Laura Lynch.
Also climbing the ladder is John Nolan who moves from 15th position to
12th by virtue of his victory over Niall Parker. Another player on
the up is Ray Breen who moves from 21st to 18th where he replaces Kenneth
Redmond. Eoin Murphy and Eoghan Cashin swap places at 16 & 17
after their close 3 setter which was won by Murphy 15/9, 8/15, 15/14.
New
Ross were well represented on the recent Wexford class 2 and 4 teams that
qualified for the
Leinster
finals in
Dublin
in March. On the class 2 team panel were Karen Hennessey, Brideen
Lynch, Laura Lynch, Celine Hayes,
Pat Lynch
and
Ralph Stone
. Ralph and Karen had an excellent days play at 2nd mixed doubles
winning all their 3 games. Karen also had 2 victories from 3 in the ladies
doubles when partnered by club colleague Brideen Lynch. Laura Lynch
made her senior debut in the competition and picked up a vital point for
the team by defeating Aoife Kavanagh (Carlow) in the final single game of
the day in which Wexford just piped their neighbours for the final
qualifying place. Meanwhile in Ramsgrange
Andrew Wayland
got a late call up to the class 4 team and made his debut in the county
colours in their match against Carlow. Also making a welcome return
to the county team was
Pat Furlong
who helped Wexford top their group that included Kilkenny, Carlow and
Laois.

Breen and John Nolan continue to make significant moves upwards in the New Ross
singles ladder after their victories over Joseph Meggs and Helen Moore
respectively. Ray moves from 17th position to 15th after an impressive
15/2, 15/4 success over the youthful Joseph Meggs. John Nolan climbs from
9th to 8th with his 15/3, 15/4 victory over Helen Moore. Both players are
now level in the most improved player’s category with
Sue Barrett
just one spot behind as the tournament enters its final third.
Pat Lynch
moves to 4th spot his highest ever position on the ladder with his 15/7, 15/13
defeat of Billy Bennett. Laura Lynch replaces
Andrew Wayland
in 6th spot after she defeated the former number 5, 15/14, 15/6. The
Waterford
division 1 mixed team followed up their 5-1 victory over
Waterford
BC
with a similar score line in their home fixture versus Ballymacabarry.
New Ross are using a rotating policy with their squad in the competition with
new members Neil Barrett and Celine Hayes slotting in nicely to the team.
Congratulations
to New Ross club members Celine Hayes and Laura Lynch after their weekend
successes in Clonmel and Lisurn. Celine played in all games for the
Wexford class-4 team as they made it through the qualifying group games.
Laura won her second under 15 open doubles title of the season when she and
partner Norma McIntyre added the
Ulster
title to the Dublin Open won earlier in the season. Laura also reached
the final of the mixed doubles event but she and partner David Tutty were beaten
15/8, 15/8 by the number 1 seeds Tony Murphy and Sinead Chambers.
