Bennet Babes win Club team tournament

A close and exciting contest was predicted in the eagerly awaited club team tournament final and it ran through to form with the Bennett Babes finishing marginally ahead of Wades Wonders on the night by 34 games to 32.  In presenting the prizes to the victorious team club chairman Martin Regan thanked the tournament sponsor Jimmy Prendergast and congratulated all those who took part.  The competition had generated great interest and the final was tense and exciting down to the very last game.

Robert creates history

The division 6 men’s team had the honour of starting the Wexford level doubles leagues with a home game against Ballykelly.  What was also unique about this game was the introduction of young Robert Farrell on the team in place of Alan Nixon.  At just 11 years and 4 months Robert thus became the youngest player to play adult league within the county and beat the previous record set by Laura Lynch in December by six months.  If Robert was in any way overawed by the occasion it certainly did not show as he picked up 3 points from a maximum of 4 to help New Ross to an impressive 7 –3 victory over the visitors.

League Results

The ladies division 6 team had an impressive home victory in their opening game with an 8 –1 defeat of Clonroche.  The men’s division 5 team won 8 – 2 away to Taghmon while the division 3 team was narrowly defeated 5 – 4 in Ferns.  On Sunday the Waterford Premier team continued their recent good form with a fine 5 –1 victory at home to Lismore.  This result puts New Ross top of the league and almost certain to make the play–offs.  In the Wexford Youth Leagues the club under 13 team had a fine 6 –1 victory over third place Clonard, but the under 17 team did their league prospects no good when they went down at home 3 – 4 to Clonard.

Teams do well in county leagues

It was another good week for club teams with the division 6 team having a fine 8 –0 home victory over Clonroche to continue their unbeaten start to the league campaign.  On Tuesday, it was the turn of the ladies novice team who chalked up the same score line in their away clash with Davidstown.  On the same night in New Ross, home advantage counted for nought as the division 3 team were beaten 6 –3 by Terrerath.  It was back to winning ways on Thursday when the division 5 team defeated Ballykelly 8-0 to maintain their position at the top of the league table.  On Saturday the under–17 team kept the momentum going with victories at home and away against Ballykelly by 6-1 and 5 –2 respectively.

County Teams

Club members Brideen Lynch, Pat Lynch and Orla Deegan were on the Wexford County panel which defeated old rivals, Meath, in the semi-final of the Leinster inter-county championship in Carlow to qualify for the final in Dublin on March the 3rd.  Carlow will provide the opposition.  Pat and Brideen Lynch are in for a hectic time as they will be travelling with the Wexford team to Navan this Saturday for the BUI All-Ireland grade two inter county preliminary rounds. On Sunday club members Orla Deegan, Mary Wade, Wayne Redmond and Eoin Mernagh play on the county under– 7 team as they search for a Leinster title in Baldoyle.

Congratulations Laura

Congratulations to Laura Lynch on being asked to join the Leinster under 13 development squad following her recent success in the provincial non-squad tournament.

Ross dominate under-age championships

The under 13 county championships held in Taghmon Community centre on Saturday last were dominated by New Ross club members who won 3 of the 4 titles up for decision.  It was an all New Ross girls singles final where Laura Lynch defeated her doubles partner Ruth McGuinness 21-18, the two teamed up later to win the doubles title with a 21 - 8 victory over the Campile pairing of Deirdre Stafford and Caoimhe O'Brien.  11-year-old Robert Farrell was the victor in the boy’s singles when he defeated Michael O'Gorman from Taghmon 21 - 9.

Leinster medals for under-age members

Congratulations to the county under 17 team and in particular club members Mary Wade, Orla Deegan, Wayne Redmond and Eoin Mernagh on winning the Leinster inter counties grade 2 under-17 championship on Sunday in Baldoyle.  Not such good news from Navan where a depleted Wexford found the going tough in the BUI championship and were comprehensibly beaten by Meath and Donegal 6 - 2 and 7 -1 respectively.  The result was no fault for club member Brideen Lynch however who was instrumental in securing all three Wexford points.  With partner Deirdre Kehoe from Taghmon BC she was unbeaten in her two ladies doubles matches and secured the other point with husband Pat in the mixed doubles against Meath.

Another good week for league teams

It was another good week for club teams with victories in both Wexford and Waterford competitions.  The Waterford premier team bounced back from their 4 -2 defeat to Lady Lane of Waterford to whitewash Touraneena in New Ross by 6 games to 0.  The Wexford division 3 men's team secured their first win of the season with an impressive 8 - 0 victory at home to Taghmon, and the following night the division 6 men repeated the performance when defeating Davidstown 8 – 0 to consolidate their position at the top of the league table.  The adult county championships begin on Saturday next in Taghmon with the division 4 and 6 ladies singles and div 6 men’s singles competitions.  Club members will be involved over the next two weeks in all six divisions and we wish them well in their quest to qualify for the various finals.

A hat-trick for Brian

Club members were very much to the fore in the first weekend of the county Badminton Championships held on Saturday and Sunday last.  In the 4th division ladies singles Orla Deegan beat Elaine Dunne from Taghmon 11-8, 11-9 and then teamed up with Mary Wade to qualify for her second final when they overcame Geraldine Mackay and Kathleen Flood of Clonroche 15-11, 15-5.   Adrian Delaney and Brian Cullen had an easier passage in their 5th division men’s doubles semi-final when they beat Paudie Foran and John Rossitter of Gusserane 15-5, 15-3.  In the sixth division singles Amy McGuinness upset the number one seed Catherine Seavers from Clonard winning in straight sets 11-7, 11-6.  In the final Amy will meet Tara Kehoe from the Olympic club who beat Laura Lynch 9-11, 11-9, 11-5 in the second semi-final.  The number one seed and defending champion Brian Cullen qualified for the sixth division men’s final, but not before he was given a major fright in the semi-final by Craig Healy from Clonard.  Brian eventually winning 6-15, 15-13, 15-3.   It was quite a weekend for Brian as he and partner Alan Nixon beat fellow club members Wayne Redmond and Eoin Mernagh 15-13, 15-8 in the sixth division men’s doubles semi-final.

Outside the county 11-year-old under-age star Robert Farrell enhanced his growing reputation by winning the plate section of the under-13 Southside Juvenile Tournament held in the Badminton Centre, Terenure on Saturday.

The Waterford Premier mixed team made the long journey to Lismore and came away with a fine 4-2 victory to further stretch their lead at the top of the table.  Barring a major centrosphere’s in their final game away to Touraneena they look set to qualify directly for the league final.  The Division 6 men’s team kept their league hopes alive with a 6-2 away win against local rivals Gusserane.  The division 6 ladies were comprehensively beaten in Piercestown 8-0 by Olympic BC to end their title hopes, and the same fate befell the division 5 men’s team when they were defeated 8-1 in Clongeen.  The division three men’s team were also well-beaten 8-1 at home by Ferns.
