Neil Barrett

New Ross Badminton players have been active over the past two weeks in the preliminary rounds of the county charity tournament and ten of the thirty one finals down for decision on Sunday night next the 12th December will feature New Ross members.  Pat Lynch and Ralph Stone are the only representative to make the finals in the top division and they will face Donal O’Keefe and Gavin Smith (Olympic) in the men’s doubles decider.  The New Ross pair are also in the division 2 final where they will renew rivalry with the Mackey brothers Alan & Vincent from Taghmon.  Pat is also in the mixed doubles final where he and wife Brideen take on another Taghmon pairing of Stewart O’Toole and Elaine Dunne.  In the division 2 ladies doubles Brideen Lynch and daughter Laura make up a unique partnership and they meet club colleague Orla Deegan and her Taghmon partner Elaine Dunne.  Laura Lynch takes on Elaine in the division 2 ladies singles decider and plays in her 3rd final when she faces Olympics Jennifer Sinnott in the division 3 ladies singles.  Neil Barrett has qualified for two division 3 finals. He partners Frances Morrissey (Clonroche) in the men’s doubles and teams up with regular partner Celine Hayes in the mixed doubles where they hope to go one better than the silver medal they took home last year.  Andrew Wayland and Wayne Redmond are the sole club representatives in the division 5 grade and they face a tough men’s final against top seeds David Ryan and Nicky Sinnott (Ballycogley). It’s another family affair in the division 7 men’s doubles where Ray Breen and dad Tony contest their first Badminton finals.  Ray is also in the men’s singles final against Gary Cullen from Galbally.  Both Ray and Tony are better know for their handball exploits, and having just taken up badminton in the past couple of weeks, qualification for a county final is a major achievement for them both.

The first semi-final sees the Tigers team captained by Pat Lynch taking on the Panthers led by Martin Regan. The second semi-final will take place on Thursday the 16th December with the Jaguars captained by Colm Byrne doing battle with the Puma’s under the leadership of Ralph Stone.

There were 34 entries which was one of the largest ever for the New Ross Club team competition when entries closed and the competition had to be postponed from its original starting date on the 7th December due to the unique problem for the organisers of being unable to cope with the large number of players interested in participating.  The club has now split the competition into a senior and intermediate event with the final of the senior grade taking place on Thursday the 16th at 7:30 p.m. when the Tigers take on the Panthers.   Tigers: Colm Byrne, Martin Regan, Billy Bennett, Rosemary Burke, Karen Hennessey, Adrian Delaney, Andrew Wayland , Wayne Redmond.  Panthers: Pat Lynch , Ralph Stone, Neill Barrett, Brideen Lynch, Pat Furlong , Celine Hayes, Laura Lynch, John Nolan.  The intermediate final between the Puma’s and the Jaguars will take place on the 11th January also at 7:30 p.m.

Div 2B Team

With the staging of the county charity tournament it has been a quite time of late for the club teams in the various team competitions.  The division 5 team did record a fine 8-0 away victory over Ballycogley B in zone B of the county mixed league.  The win keeps the teams slim hopes of qualification for the knockout stages alive, but realistically it will still take a major stumble over the last couple of games by the current leaders Galbally and Clonroche to achieve this.  New Ross team:  Adrian Delaney, Andrew Wayland , Helen Moore and Sue Barrett .  The only other team in action was the division 2B side who went down 8-0 away to league leaders Taghmon in their final league match: Team:  Frankie Morrissey, Neil Barrett, Orla Deegan and Celine Hayes.

The Leinster under-16 team with local player Laura Lynch on the squad finished a creditable 3rd behind Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire at the York Under 16 open team event.  Leinster briefly led the tournament on Saturday evening, but slipped a little in the doubles events.  Team manager Itta Marron and coach Pat Marron were still happy with the team’s performance against strong opposition from several English and Scottish teams. Laura herself had a 1 in 3 success in the singles events and a 3 from 5 record in the girls doubles.

The Tigers mauled the Panthers in a highly entertaining final of the New Ross Badminton club senior team competition as they recorded an 13-8 victory in winning the first club competition of the season.  The Tigers raced into a 4-2 lead after the opening games with Martin Regan and Colm Byrne defeating Pat Lynch and Ralph Stone 12/13, 13/2, 13/8.  Billy Bennett and Rosemary Burke followed this up with a 9/13, 13/11, 13/12 victory over Brideen Lynch and Neil Barrett.  Celine Hayes and Pat Furlong recorded the Panthers first win when they defeated Karen Hennessy and Adrian Delaney 9/13, 13/11. 13/10, but the Tigers regained their advantage immediately when Andrew Wayland and Wayne Redmond overcame Laura Lynch and John Nolan 13/12, 13/9.  In the 2nd series of games Colm Byrne and Billy Bennett stretched the tigers lead even further when they had an easier than expected success 13/4, 13/9 over Pat Lynch and Neil Barrett.  Brideen Lynch and Ralph Stone looked sharp for the Panthers in their doubles when overcoming Rosemary Burke and Martin Regan 13/6, 13/6.  The final two games went the way of the Tigers with Karen Hennessy and Andrew Wayland defeating Pat Furlong and Laura Lynch 13/2, 6/13, 13/10 and Adrian Delaney and Wayne Redmond defeating Celine Hayes and John Nolan 13/5, 11/13, 13/12.

Div 2A Team

Despite a fine 6-4 home win by the clubs division 2A team over league leaders and defending champions Taghmon it was not enough to deny the visitors their 2nd title in a row.  Needing to win by a clear 5 points to force a play-off the home side lost the opening ladies doubles game when Brideen Lynch and Rosemary Burke were beaten 17/14, 15/13 by Deirdre Kehoe and Gillian Murphy.  Taghmon then took the opening set of the first mixed doubles with Deirdre and Stewart O’Toole winning 15/13 over Pat & Brideen Lynch, but the recent charity winners fought back to take the remaining two games 15/13, 15/8.  New Ross then took the lead on the night when Rosemary Burke and Ralph Stone defeated Philip Wadding and Gillian Murphy in 2 sets.  The home side also won the final men’s doubles game with Pat Lynch and Ralph Stone defeating Stewart O’Toole and Philip Wadding 6/15, 15/3, 15/4.  The division 5 team also suffered a setback in their quest for the runner-spot in the division 5 zone B mixed league when they were beaten 5-4 at home by Clonard.  New Ross winners on the night were Adrian Delaney and Andrew Wayland in the men’s doubles and Andrew Wayland and Sue Barrett in the 2nd mixed doubles match.

Ralph Stone

Half-way through the New Ross club singles ladder competition and defending champion Ralph Stone is still holding on to the top position in his quest to defend the title won for the first time last season.  There was plenty of activity on the ladder leading up to the Christmas break, with John Nolan making a significant move upwards when he had a fine 15/6, 15/4 victory over Eoghan Cashin.  Billy Bennett made a winning return to the singles court when he overcame Andrew Wayland 15/10, 15/5 in his first match back and Sue Barrett moves from 13th position to 10th by virtue of a fine 15/6, 1/15, 15/6 victory over Joseph Sinnott.

The club returned to action after the Christmas break on Monday last and already the action is coming thick and fast.  Taghmon are the visitors on Wednesday night for the 2nd leg of the division 1 mixed league final.  New Ross trail the defending champions 8-2 after the first leg and barring a monumental stumble the return leg is a mere formality for the visitors, with New Ross seemingly playing for pride only.  Club members are reminded that the closing date for those interested in playing in the Wexford doubles leagues is fast approaching and anyone interested should include their name on the board as soon as possible.

The Waterford mixed league starts on Monday the 10th January with a new look New Ross team playing away to defending champions Waterford .  Missing Pat Lynch , Martin Regan and Orla Deegan from last year’s team they face a tough opening encounter, with Colm Byrne, Neil Barrett and Celine Hayes coming into the side.  Meanwhile in the Waterford men’s league Terrerath’s had a fine 2-2 home draw with defending champions Lismore, but lost 3-1 away to current leaders Waterford in their final match.  The 3 points obtained however ensures the New Ross district side remain in a creditable 3rd position.

On Tuesday night the 11th the Pumas and Jaguar’s meet in the New Ross clubs intermediate team final, with proceeding beginning at 7:30 p.m.

It was a good holiday period for under-age star Laura Lynch with a double success at the Leinster Close Juvenile badminton finals.  Laura picked up winners trophies in the ladies and mixed doubles finals and was a runner-up in the under 15 girls singles competition.  Her next major competition will be the Ulster open on the 22nd & 23rd January.
