Hat-trick for Mary and Orla
Taghmon
Community centre was the venue on Sunday for the finals of the Wexford Badminton
Association “Creane & Creane” sponsored Charity tournament.
Over thirty finals were down for decision and the large attendance were
rewarded with excellent, exciting and competitive Badminton.
This tournament was once a regular feature of the badminton calendar and
with nearly £1,000 raised for cancer research from this event hopefully it will
be the start of another sequence of annual events.
There were some outstanding individual performances on the night and none
more so than the hat trick of gold medals won by New Ross Badminton Club members
Orla Deegan and Mary Wade. Mary won
her first medal in the division 6 singles with a 2 set to 1 victory over
Christine Sinnott from Ballykelly. While
Mary was winning her singles Orla was playing Elaine Dunne from Taghmon on court
1 and despite losing the first set she recovered well to secure a 2 sets to
1victory. Also in action in the
singles was Brian Cullen who was up against the new under-age superstar of
Wexford Badminton Donal O’Keefe from the Olympic club.
Brian was always in control in this match however and won easily in two
straight sets, but none the less a good achievement by Donal to reach the finals
at just 15 years of age. In the
Ladies doubles Mary & Orla teamed up in the 5th division and won
their second gold medal with a two sets to love victory over their Ballycogley
opponents. In the division 2 men’s doubles Pat Lynch and Martin Regan finally
got the better of Alan Carton and Sean Sexton from Clonroche to win by two sets
to one. While Pat has plenty experience of finals this was Martins first success
at county level. In the division 6
doubles spare a thought for Wayne Redmond and Eoin Mernagh who were forced to
concede a walkover due to an injury to Wayne earlier in the weeks while playing
for the New Ross Vocational College. In the division 2 mixed doubles the number one seeds Pat
& Brideen Lynch were beaten by Alan Carton and Miriam Butler in two straight
sets. Meanwhile in the division 5
and 6 finals Orla and Mary were trying to complete a hat trick of events.
On court one Orla and Adrian Delaney lost the opening set to their
Ballycogly opponents. Brian Cullen
and Mary were doing better on court 2 winning the first set comfortably from P.
J. MacMackin and Caroline Sinnott from Ballykelly.
Brian and Mary continued to dominate the game and eventually won in two
straight sets. It was much tighter
on court 1 however, but the New Ross pairing managed to hold on to win the
second set and despite some scary moments in the third they kept their nerves
and won by two sets to one. Team Results With
the preliminary rounds of the Charity Tournament taking place there were no
adult league fixtures during the week. The
under 13’s commenced their league campaign on Saturday with a 3 – 4 home
defeat to Taghmon. New Ross were
without the services of Ruth McGuinness and Niall Parker and called in as
replacements was Aoife Bennett and 8 year old Kevin Burke.
New Ross picked up their points in the boys & girls singles where
Robert Farrell and Laura Lynch were too strong for their opponents and these
teamed up in the first mixed doubles to secure the third point.
New Ross team: Laura Lynch (capt), Aoife Bennett, Claire Mernagh, Robert
Farrell, Declan Burke and Kevin Burke. Club Team Championship The second semi-final of the club team championship takes place on Tuesday next and has the very regimented and precise team of Furlong’s Fusiliers lead by superb tactician Pat Furlong up against the unpredictable Wade’s Wonders. There is little doubt that the Fusiliers will be extremely well prepared, but it will be the performance of the Wonders that may determine the result. Team captain Mary Wade believes that if they are on their game they will be unstoppable, but she admits that until the night she has no way of knowing how her team will react. December
16th County Teams The
county management team of Jimmy Butler, Mick Murphy and Joe Carton have selected
their preliminary squads for the Leinster and All Ireland inter county
championships, which begin early in the New Year. This year the panels have undergone major changes with
many former stalwarts either retired, or dropped from the panel.
The New Ross club representatives is reduced to just three, Pat &
Brideen Lynch and one of the county’s most promising players 15 year old Orla
Deegan. Indeed the management team have decided to give youth their
chance on the various panels and Orla and 16 year old Marie Ann Carroll from
Taghmon certainly made the selectors take note of their presence with good
performances in the first trial session held in St. Brid’s School, Enniscorthy
on Sunday night last. The county
squads will be quite busy over the Christmas period with further sessions
scheduled for the 28th December and the 6th of January. Club Team Championship First
finalists in the Club team championship are the Bennett’s Babes who defeated
the Nixon’s Vixens by 35 sets to 25 before a large attendance in the
Vocational College on Tuesday last. They
now await the winners of other semi-final between Furlong’s Fusiliers and
Wades Wonders. League Results New
Ross premier men’s team recent unbeaten run came to an end on Friday last in
the Waterford league when they were well beaten by second place Lismore by 3
games 1. New Ross only success was
in the first men’s doubles where Pat Lynch and Martin Regan had a good win
over Waterford inter-county players Pat Morrissey and Colin Whelan. New Ross
concludes their league program away to league leaders Waterford on Thursday. In
the Wexford mixed league the division 5-team got back to winning ways with a 6-3
home victory over Clongeen. New
Ross won both the ladies and gent’s doubles when Orla Deegan and Mary Wade and
Adrian Delaney and Brian Cullen had good victories. Adrian and Orla secured the
other two points in the first mixed doubles, but Brian and Mary lost in two
straight sets in the second mixed doubles. In
the county under-age league there were mixed results for the two New Ross teams
in action away to Clonard. The
fancied under 17 team without the injured Wayne Redmond played poorly and were
well beaten by last years under 16 runners-up Clonard by 5 games to 2.
New Ross only victories came in girl’s singles where Orla Deegan won
easily by 21 aces to 1 and Eoin Mernagh and Mary Wade picked up the other point
with an easy victory in the second mixed doubles.
Even at this early stage New Ross are now playing catch up to league
favourites Taghmon and second place Clonard. Better luck in the under 13 league where New Ross beat the home side by 4 games to 3. Good victories in the girls and boys singles by Laura Lynch and Robert Farrell got the away side off to the best possible start. Clonard narrowly won the boys doubles, but Ruth McGuinness and sub Jennifer Parker restored the twp point cushion by winning the girls doubles. Ross went three point up when Laura and Robert teamed up to win the first mixed doubles. Clonard narrowly won the second mixed doubles by the narrowest of margins when Declan Burke and Ruth lost by 21 aces to 20. Niall and Jennifer Parker also put up a good show in the third mixed doubles before losing narrowly 21-18. Club Team Championships In
the second semi-final of the Club team championship sponsored by Jimmy
Prendergast, Wades Wonders had an impressive 11 set victory over
Furlong’s Fusiliers and now qualify to play the Bennett’s Babes in the final
on the 22nd January. This
game is eagerly awaited and should be a close fought affair as the Babes were
also impressive in the first semi-final when beating Nixon’s Vixens by 10
sets. The format for the
tournament, which is similar to the new international format of each set played
to seven aces, is proving very interesting as players try to cope with the new
arrangements. Club Playing Gear For
the first time in its history the club will have it’s own unique playing gear
available for members after the Christmas recess. After consultation it was decided that the time was now right
for teams and individuals representing the club to use a standard playing kit.
The new kit comprises a navy shorts/skirts with a white and navy jersey
including the club crest. The
jerseys have just arrived back from the embroiders and will be available to
members at a subsidised cost immediately after the Christmas break.
Club
Teams The
various teams selected to participate in the local Wexford and Waterford league
were announced during the week. The
club will have five teams competing in the Wexford League and one team in the
Waterford premier mixed league.
