April 05

Week 1

Ralph Stone

Recently retired Leinster Secretary Dick O’Rafferty will be the quest of honour at the awards ceremony in the New Ross Vocational College on the 28th April.  Dick who is also a much sought after coach has recently moved to Duncannon from Dublin and will be on hand to savour the unique atmosphere of the final night and to present the prices at the conclusion of the events.   Already assured of trophies on the night are the winners of the club singles ladder which has just concluded.  After a season long competition Ralph Stone sits proudly on the top rung and retained the title he won last season.  Martin Reegan takes the runner up spot, a position he also carries over from last season.  Laura Lynch wins the top female award in 8th position.  There were joint winners of the most improved player category with both John Nolan and Ray Breen moving up 13 places on the ladder during the season.

Competitors in line for this years Club Player of the Year Award have also been selected and they feature the 2003 winner Laura Lynch, last years winner Ralph Stone plus Pat Lynch ,  Neil Barrett and newcomer to the club Raymond Breen.

A busy schedule in the week ahead for New Ross club teams who are involved in crucial games in the Wexford doubles and the Waterford mixed doubles league.  In the Wexford league the men’s division 1 team face Olympic in their final league game of the season knowing that they must beat the Wexford side by 3 points in order to clinch the league title.  New Ross drew 5-5 in the away fixture earlier in the campaign and will need a massive home game result in this fixture in order to wrest the title from the Wexford District side.  New Ross team:  Colm Byrne, Pat Lynch , Martin Regan and Ralph stone.  Olympic:  Liam Sinnott, Alan Mackay, Donal O’Keeffe and Gavin Smith.

The Waterford division 1 mixed doubles team take on surprise packets Ballymacarbry in the final of this year’s mixed doubles league.  New Ross were champions in 2003 and runners-up last season and will be hoping that their greater final experience will stand to them on the night against the West Waterford side who are appearing in their 1st final.  Ballymacarbry will not lack for confidence however having beaten the current champions Waterford BC in the semi-final and have on their squad a mixture of Tipperary and Waterford inter-county players.  New Ross team:  Colm Byrne, Ralph Stone, Neil Barrett, Brideen Lynch, Rosemary Burke and Celine Hayes.

Week 2

Pat Lynch & BUI President Craig Casey

It was refreshing to see such a large number of sporting organisations present at the BUI Club and Club Person of the Year Awards held in the White Sands Hotel Portmarnock.  Guests included Fiona Coyne - Irish Sports Council, Pat Hickey - Olympic Council of Ireland, Brian McCargo - Sports Council for Northern Ireland , Pauline Gilsenan - Fingal Sports Partnership plus members of the BUI Executive.  At the ceremonies Pat Lynch was the recipient of the Stein Travel National Club Player of the Year prize for his work on behalf of the New Ross Badminton Club and his efforts in promoting the sport of badminton over the past twenty-five years.  When receiving his award from the BUI president Craig Casey, Pat thanked the New Ross club and club chairman Ralph Stone for nominating him and Stein Travel for their generous sponsorship of the national and regional prizes.  He complimented Mary Browne and the BUI executive for their foresight in organising an event of this type.  He was extremely honoured to be selected for such a prestigious award as he felt that any one of the nineteen nominees would have been equally wordy of the honour, but he was delighted to have been selected from among such dedicated and hard working club members.  He never considered his work for the club or the promotion of the game he loved as a chore and he was only too happy to introduce the sport to as many people as possible.  He wished the BUI continued success with the awards which he felt could only go from strength to strength.   Hopefully Pat will now find some free time in his busy schedule to avail of the prize of a week’s holiday in Salou, Majorca , or Portugal which was presented by Stein Travel.
